Hello all,

I have a home development server and need a simple, easy to use
and preferably free firewall. Is there such a thing? If not free at lease
good.

I have had Symantec’s 2002 firewall running but the updates do not work on
Win servers.

Much thanks
David S

Hi Stibbs

You may try ZoneAlarm, there is a free (limited) version, but it does
the work:

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp?lid=ho_za

Other recommended products for PC health:

Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.spybot.info/es/index.html
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

Both are shareware.

Best regards,

Jorge Pérez

What sort of connection do you have? most broadband routers now come with
NAT/firewall capabilities, which should certainly be switched on and
correctly configured. that's the outside layer of the onion taken care of,
then you may (or may not but I'd recommend it in many situations) also want
a host-based firewall such as Zone Alarm as Jorge recommended, for an extra
layer of defence if you have wireless access or other machines in your
network, this is a good idea.

There are numerous others available too, try www.download.com for a
selection

Besides, www.zonealarm.com, there is also www.kerio.com and www.sygate.com.
All are free software firewalls and are as good as the software firewalls
you pay for.

Have you tried Google?

Unless you buy the server version of course.

Best would be a small hardware firewall, such as those by SonicWall or
Watchguard.  Next would be a dedicated firewall system running IP Cop
or Enguarde or another secure Linux derivative.  Last choice would be
a personal firewall, which is what you seem to be looking for.  Google
only lists a bazillion of these, so take your pick.
