IIS 5.0 Directory Settings help

I'm a college student and I've got my computer hosted by my university
so that I can set up generally viewable websites and all that. Since
I'm moving around a lot, I've set up RDC, but there are some times when
it would be really handy to be able to access a specific file on one of
three or four folders. I've added them as virtual directories, and when
I allow guest access, they work just fine. However,  I'd rather not
allow every Tom, Dick, and Harry to be able to access them, and I'd
like to implement some type of security. Since I've got a couple of
friends who I'd like to be able to access one or two of the folders,
I'd like to implement the integrated windows security option. I checked
it, and when I access my page, it prompts me for a password. I put in
my username and login, but it then displays "page cannot be displayed".
Now I know I have "Directory Browsing" checked but it still won't let
me get to the folder. I've tried just about every configuration of
permissions I can think of, but it won't let me do it. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!

Does the folder have NTFS permissions configured to allow your account
access?

Each account has "read & execute", "list directory" and "read"
permissions for each folder. Also, there is "Guest" and "Everybody".

Are you logging in as a specific account with access?  Is that account
in Guest or Everybody?  Do those accounts have the right to log on
locally?

I've tried to log in using an account I created for the express purpose
of logging in remotely, and using my normal admin account. I know my
admin account can log on locally, but I've never tried with the other
one. The specific account is a member of the "users" group, as well as
a "downloads" group. Each directory I wish to access has permissions
set up for my admin account as well as the "downloads" group.

Also, I don't know if it helps, but when I right-click on the folders
in question, and go to the "Web Sharing" tab, "Share the folder" is not
checked. When I set this up, I right-clicked on  "My Web" in IIS and
added a virtual folder. Should I delete the virtual folder and set it
up through the "Web Sharing" interface instead?

When accessed using a valid username and password with administrator
rights to the machine, I get a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message. Its
using HTTP. The page itself, mycomp.myhost.edu works fine. To access
it, I use mycomp.myhost.edu/pictures, which works fine when anonymous
access is enabled.

Post the log entries on the request here.
the default log path is located at
%windir%/system32/logfiles/w3svcX/
where X is the site id.

this is 401 error. could be login, access permission etc. I don't think you
see 'page cannot display' what does the browser tell you ? 401.1 or .3 or .X
?

It definitely says "Page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking
for cannot be displayed" as opposed to a 401.x "You are not authorized
to vierw this page". Is there anything special I need for directory
browsing?

Nope. pretty straight forward.
- checked the 'directory browsing' flag
- make sure there's no default document that will 'start' when browse the
folder /

Right now, I have "read" and "directory browsing" enabled, and
"integrated Windows authentication" checked, and yet I still get "page
cannot be displayed" errors when I try and authenticate using accounts
that are known to be good. I also gave explicit permissions under the
"Permissions" tab to the accounts I want to have access, which doesn't
help. Any ideas?

This is getting to way off :)
page cannot be displayed ???
do you have any special isapi filter or special software install in the box
?
coz from the log file your posted previously, there's only signs of login
error, and one 404 page not found of the .ico file. other than that, I can't
see anything related to that.

can you run any simple html file in that particular folder ?
like http://yourserver.com/thepathhavingproblem/thetest.html

NTFS permissions?

I think I've set them correctly. I've given the admin group full access
to the entire drive and the group I want permission to download read
and list files permissions. I also made sure they were set on each
folder within the drive as well. Still no dice.
