We didn't have one but all of a sudden one showed up.  Now we can't
get into the database.  I joined the workgroup file but it asks for a
username and password.  I don't know how it ever got activated.  Is it
possible to set up a workgroup security by accident?

No.  Someone's been "fiddling".  Use your most recent backup and apply some
restrictions at file level (for starters).

It is possible that someone setup a new workgroup. By
default, the act of setting up a new workgroup joins you
to the new workgroup.

See if you can re-join the default workgroup.
