Help with security - PleaseI am trying (unsuccessfully) to add a database to an existing workgroup file.
I am having continuing problems because I have never set up security on a database. The workgroup I'm am trying to add the database to was set up by a previous person and I am familiar with setting permissions, adding new users, etc. but I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I have read several threads with responses from Joan Wild but I can't get it right and am getting rather frustrated. I have visited www.jmwild.com and read the "Access 2002/2003 Security Step by Step" but then decided that I would rather add it to the existing workgroup. Is there a step by step out there for adding a database to an existing group? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! You have an existing secure mdw file that you wish to secure a second mdb
with, right? You can create a desktop shortcut with "path to msaccess.exe" /wrkgrp "path to secure.mdw" That will open Access. Next click on New (to create a new mdb). At this point it will prompt you for a username/password - provide it with the user who you want to own everything in your secure mdb. Next import all objects (File, Get external data, Import) from your mdb. Don't forget to click on Options and import menubars and import/export specs etc. Now you have a mdb that is owned by you, using the secure mdw. Next you proceed to remove all permissons on all objects for the Users Group. Next you assign permissions for all objects to the groups you have in your secure.mdw Post back if you're unclear on anything. -- Show quoteHide quoteJoan Wild Microsoft Access MVP AccessIM wrote: > I am trying (unsuccessfully) to add a database to an existing > workgroup file. Thank you! workgroup and then import all of the objects from the app you want to secure. The example on my web site might help but it sounds as if you need to read the MS FAQ on security. It's a complex document because security is a complex issue, but once the penny drops you'll be glad you read it. HTH - Keith. www.keithwilby.com
