Hello all,

After struggling for a couple months with the user and group level security
functions - I give up. It simply will not do what I want. The objective was
to keep my database on a network drive so that users could log in and enter
and edit data, without editing the database structure. For some reason people
cannot log in from any computer but mine.

So, I would like to remove the security from my database. Can anyone tell me
how to do this? I noticed a recent posting on a similar topic but I couldn't
quite follow the suggestions.

Thanks VERY much!

The reason they can't log in from other computers is because they are not
using the MDW (workgroup file) associated with your database.  You need to
place that mdw file in the shared location as well and create a shortcut so
your users will join that workgroup when they open the database.

Alternately, you could place it in a common area and have them use the
workgroup administrator to join that workgroup.  If you do that though, they
will always have to log into your workgroup, even when they use other
database files.

Thanks Rick.  You have inspired me to try one more time.

When I copied the database over I also copied the "secured.mdw" file and the
shortcut that I used to open it.  At first, I forgot to change the workgroup
in the target of the shortcut to refer to this new location.  When someone
else tried to log-in they got an error message that said something about the
data not being locked... When I logged in from their computer, the database
would only open as read-only.

So, I changed the workgroup in the target of the shortcut to refer to this
new location. But I am still having the same problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

What additional problems are  you having? Could you post the target of your
shortcut?

It /will/ do what you want. You just haven't managed to figure it out!

Have you been using an explicit list of written instructions; eg. like
the Access Security FAQ, often referenced in this newsgroup?

Most people have little/no hope of working it out by experimentation,
or just by using the wizard.

HTH,
