Security on a shared version of Access?

At my company all the users share a version of Access.  It runs off the
network - they do NOT have their own copies installed on their computers.  I
can't change this - I just have to work with it.

Can I use the normal process of securing a database?  The users will be
running Access 2000 from the network and then using a DB file on a shared
network drive.

While that setup is not ideal it should have no effect on how user level
security works.
